Alonzo – Chocolate Male Mix, 1.5 years, 78 lbs
I’m a dancer, a prancer, and a terrible landscaper. I sure do want to love someone. Alonzo here, aka Happy Feet. The shelter gave me that name because I always danced when I saw them in the morning. Yes, I’m a shelter dog, you know the story, picked up as a stray, no one came looking for me, ya-da, ya-da, ya-da. But the shelter folks saw something special in me and never put me on “the list.” Instead, they got me ready for adoption by socializing me, getting me all my vaccinations, and, um, removing my manhood. All good though, because when they reached out to the Defenders of Dogs, that wonderful rescue LRRF, I was snatched up and placed with an amazing foster.
Since I’ve been here, I’ve been able to go on walks with my foster brother who’s taught me some manners. I love to play with him in the yard, we play bitey face, zoom around, play tug, and drink like labs from the big bucket. I love to play fetch and will even bring the ball right back to you. In the house I love to lay at my foster’s feet, or by his side on the couch. I’m happy on a dog bed or in the crate too. I’m ready to be part of a loving family, one I can go on adventures with then come home and cuddle the rest of the day away.
Alonzo is still a young dog and needs daily exercise. He loves to play fetch and tug but is a destroyer of stuffed animals. He is super quick to learn, knows sit, down, and off and walks well on a leash. He will need a family committed to further training and daily exercise.
Sometimes Alonzo is unaware of his size. He plays well with dogs his size, but tends to mob and throw his weight around with smaller dogs. On the positive, he ignores the foster cat, who is a bully in his own right. He would do well as an only dog or with other large dogs. His rambunctious play makes him suited for a family with older children.
Alonzo is available for adoption through the Labrador Retriever Rescue of Fresno. He is currently being fostered in a home with two other labs and a cat. He is very loving and wants to please. He is still a puppy at heart and will need daily exercise and training to grow into a lifelong companion. It will be important that everyone in the household be able to reinforce his training and give him a consistent message.
